The Material Scientist position is responsible for researching and studying the structures and chemical properties of various materials, including ceramics, coatings, metal and non-metals found within mechanical seals and other fluid handling equipment. The Material Scientist will be accountable for developing or identifying new materials to improve product performance, simplify products, and reduce cost. The position will require the knowledge and use of tribology to perform Root Cause Analysis, material selection, and product testing.
Conduct research into the structures and properties of materials, such as ceramics, coatings, metals and non-metals to obtain information that could be used to develop new technologies, new products or enhance existing products.
Measure wear and friction of candidate materials for mechanical seals under controlled conditions and identify the wear mechanism and surface chemistry promoting low wear regimes. Based on expert analysis, improved materials and coatings may be recommended and robust models of seal wearing behavior over typical conditions proposed.
Determine ways to strengthen or combine materials or develop new materials with new or specific properties for use in a variety of products and applications.
Study the nature, structure and physical properties of ceramics, metals and their alloys, and their responses to applied forces.
Devise testing methods to evaluate the effects of various conditions on particular materials.
Plan laboratory experiments to confirm feasibility of processes and techniques used in the production of materials having special characteristics.
Test individual parts and products in order to ensure that manufacturer and governmental quality and safety standards are met.
Prepare reports of materials study findings for the use of other scientists/engineers and requestors.
Recommend materials for reliable performance in various environments.
Confer with customers in order to determine how materials can be tailored to suit their needs.
Monitor production processes to ensure that equipment is used efficiently and that projects are completed within appropriate time frames and budgets.
Collaborate with Universities and National labs.
Visit suppliers of materials or users of products to gather specific material and application information.
Actively promote the safety program and ensure all safety policies are followed on projects.
Perform all required trainings on time, which include safety trainings, import/export compliance, and ISO procedures training
Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science with a focus in Tribology is required
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Excellent computer skills including MS Word and Excel
Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment
Ability to work independently, take initiative and focus with a high sense of urgency
Experience with ceramic manufacturing, hot press, cold press, sintering, powder preparation
Materials systems: carbide, carbon, nitride, ceramic composites
Experience with lab equipment Project management, leadership, and group experience
Greenbelt, Blackbelt or Lean training experience preferred
Rotating equipment experience
Working with manufacturing, transition and support, quality control
